The Red Sox never gave up on bringing back the outfielder who provided plenty of bang for their bucks in 2012.
But the team didn’t pull out all the stops for Cody Ross, either. Boston filled several outfield positions while leaving the door open for Ross well into the offseason after Ross contributed 22 home runs and 81 RBIs during his one-year, $3 million deal with the Red Sox.
On Saturday, whatever negotiations the Red Sox and Ross had came to a close as Ross instead signed a reported three-year, $26 million deal with the Diamondbacks. While more details are sure to surface, early rumblings from the Ross camp appear to show that Ross didn’t love the way his dealings with the Red Sox’ front office turned out.
Steve Gilbert, who covers the Diamondbacks for MLB.com, tweeted a series of remarks from Ross on Saturday night. While Ross was decidedly pleased to join his hometown Arizona, he didn’t have much to say for the Red Sox after the D-Backs wooed him by finding room in their own crowded outfield.
