The hours leading up to Saturday’s tragedy involving former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher are becoming a bit clearer, perhaps giving an inkling into what motivated the 25-year-old to murder his girlfriend before killing himself.
According to reporting by Sports Illustrated, on Friday night Belcher was not only out “partying,” but doing so with a woman who was not Kasandra Perkins, his girlfriend and mother of his three-month-old child. Apparently Belcher and this second woman became separated at some point during the night, causing Belcher to go to her apartment in search of her.
Belcher was intoxicated, so neighbors of the woman allowed him to stay at their apartment. Belcher even asked them to wake him at 6:30 a.m. because he had to attend a Chiefs team meeting. Upon waking, Belcher went to Perkins’ home, who had also been out the previous evening in the same district of Kansas City he was.
Earlier on Monday, both Belcher’s and Perkins’ families released statements regarding the tragedy, as did Chiefs running back Jamal Charles, whose wife is a cousin of Perkins and was responsible for introducing her and Belcher.
“As a family, no words can express the loss we feel of Jovan and Kasandra,” Belcher’s aunt, uncle and sister read in prepared remarks. “The impact that this inconceivable tragedy has had on our hearts is immeasurable.”
“On behalf of the Perkins Family, we appreciate the outpouring of love and concern for our Kasandra ‘Kasi’ Perkins,” reads the statement by the Perkins family. “Our hearts are truly broken for Kasi was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, mother, cousin and friend. At this time we request the media respect our privacy during this difficult time as we grieve for our loved one.”
