The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn., touched the hearts of people across the nation Friday. While preparing for the Celtics’ game against the Rockets in Houston, coach Doc Rivers called it a “black day.” A bit farther north in Oklahoma City, Kevin Durant paid homage in his own, quiet way.

Durant scrawled “NEWTOWN CT” on his white Nikes prior to the Thunder’s home game against the Kings. The understated gesture did not make much difference in the grand scheme, but it was another sign that Durant is a classier kind of superstar.
