Calvin Pace, Jets’ Defense Calls Out Horrid Play of Jets’ Offense as ‘Story of Our Season’

Mark Sanchez turned in a, well, Mark Sanchez type of performance on Monday night, and the Jets will again be relegated to their living room couches come playoff time.

Sanchez finished the game 13 of 28 for just 131 yards. More importantly, he tossed four picks and lost a fumble in the 14-10 loss to the 5-9 Titans. After the game, a few members of the New York defense weren’t exactly thrilled with the way the offense played, especially since it’s been a common theme.

“Story of our season. Shooting yourself in the foot, over and over and over again,” Jets linebacker Calvin Pace told the New York Daily News. “I don’t care who you’re playing. You can’t beat anybody if you turn the ball over five times.”

The Jets fell to 6-8 with the loss, and they’ve now missed the postseason two straight years after going to back-to-back AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010. Much of the reason for the consecutive disappointing campaigns has been the subpar quarterback play and the overall ineptitude of the offense. The offense has turned the ball over 33 times this season (second-worst in the AFC) and has been haunted by a minus-11 turnover differential.

“We have to play an opponent and play ourself. Can’t win like that,” said Pace, who admitted it was frustrating to watch the offense struggle.

Jets safety LaRon Landry was also a little perturbed after Monday’s game, as it was clear he wasn’t exactly oozing with confidence when the Jets took over in Titans territory near the end of the game.

“Like I said, I play defense,” Landry said. “My mindset on the sidelines? I hope they want to capitalize. I hope they want to win.”

The Jets — in typical Jets fashion — didn’t capitalize, and they’re now faced with another offseason that’s sure to be full of questions. And while the defense hasn’t exactly been as stout as in years past, it’s clear the biggest problem lies on the offensive side of the ball.
