The Phoenix Suns will be back in black next season.
The Suns will bring back their black alternate uniforms from the 1990s for 10 games starting in 2013, the team announced Friday. The duds that legends like Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson wore while making the Suns a perennial championship contender will make a reappearance as part of the NBA’s “Hardwood Classics” promotion.
“To be honest with you, I thought they never should have gone away,” Suns vice president of player programs Mark West said, demonstrating that he is both a gentleman and a scholar. “I thought once we introduced them, it should have been a part of the Suns’ legacy moving forward. But since they weren’t, I’m really glad to see them coming back.”
The Suns introduced the “sunburst” look in 1992-93 on their home white and road purple jerseys. Two years later they added the black alternates that Jared Dudley, Goran Dragic and others will wear copies of next season.
The only issue we have with this is the decision not to make the move immediately. Those periwinkle and gray unis the Suns wear now could be retired overnight, and nobody would likely miss them.
