Kendrys MoralesThe Mariners had been very quiet this offseason, but they perked up on Wednesday and acquired a much-needed bat.

Seattle announced they traded starting pitcher Jason Vargas to the Angels for first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales. Morales will likely DH for the Mariners, pushing Jesus Montero to be a full-time catcher.

For the Angels, this solidifies their outfield with Mike Trout in left field, Peter Bourjos in center and Josh Hamilton in right. Mark Trumbo will DH.

Vargas had been helped by Seattle’s pitching haven, Safeco Field. Last season, Vargas had a 2.74 ERA and 9 home runs allowed in 14 starts at home. On the road, Vargas had a 4.78 ERA and yielded 26 home runs in 19 starts. The Mariners are moving their fences in this season, so Vargas’ home-field advantage could have diminished in 2013 and beyond.
