The Red Sox wouldn’t mind having another veteran in the lineup or backup in the outfield. Bobby Abreu could provide both.
The 38-year-old has worked out for the team in Venezuela, Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports. While that in itself is of interest as the Red Sox continue to sign free agents, what is even more interesting is that Abreu did first base drills during the workout.
Abreu has never played first base in the major leagues, but the Red Sox may need help there as they take time to come to terms with their main corner option, Mike Napoli. A Dec. 3 agreement between the Red Sox and Napoli for three years and $39 million has yet to be finalized after Napoli came for his team physical.
Abreu played just eight games for the Angels last year before he was waived due to concerns about playing time. He then joined the Dodgers and played 92 games for them, hitting .246.
The lifetime .292 batter, who has played 17 seasons in the major leagues, is known for his patience at the plate. He has a .396 career on-base percentage and has drilled 287 home runs in his career.
