SYDNEY — Former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero has formed his own motor racing team together with American actor Patrick Dempsey.

The soccer player said Dempsey/Del Piero Racing has submitted an entry for the Le Mans 24 hour race in June and would run two cars in the American Le Mans Series from March.

The U.S.-based team will have three riders in the 24-hour race — Dempsey and American veterans Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti. Drivers for the ALMS series have not been announced but Del Piero is not expected to have a driving role.

Del Piero, who now plays for Sydney FC in the Australian league, said he expects the team to be competitive and “our central focus will be on winning world championships.” Dempsey is best known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy but is a racing enthusiast and has previously competed in Le Mans.
