It seems that some reporters might have jumped the gun on an agreement between the Arizona Cardinals and Andy Reid. Or the team isn’t ready to admit to such a deal exists.
Either way, the Cardinals’ vice president of media eelations had a clever response to the reported Reid deal. Mark Dalton tweeted, “I’m 99 percent sure that reports of a deal being 95 percent done are 100 percent incorrect.”
Well, then. The Cardinals met with defensive coordinator Ray Horton on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter — and while we’re not saying that’s just to fulfill the Rooney Rule, if rumors are true that the Cardinals are all in on Reid, it certainly looks like it.
Arizona will meet with Reid on Wednesday, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Reid’s main pitch to the Cardinals will be that he can fix quarterback Kevin Kolb, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
It’s debatable that Kolb even technically needs “fixing.” And if he does, it’s also debatable that Reid is the one that can do it. Before going down with multiple injuries this year, Kolb was having the best season of his career with eight touchdowns and three interceptions, while completing 59.6 percent of his passes. In Philadelphia, his completion percentage and yards per attempt were higher, but his interception rate was also much higher.
Unless Reid plans to fix the Cardinals’ atrocious offensive line, which was the cause for Kolb’s sprained sternoclavicular joint, detached ribs and shoulder injury, there may not be much fixing to do to get him back to his Philadelphia playing level. Arizona should be focusing on fixing their offensive line regardless.
It seems that the Cardinals are not only frontrunners for Reid’s services, but they may be the only bidders so far. Arizona’s only other coaching candidate other than Reid and Horton is Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. The Cardinals will interview him this weekend, according to Schefter.
