The Kansas men’s basketball team wrapped up a 61-44 victory over Baylor at home Monday night, making it 14 straight victories for the Jayhawks. But as ESPN prepared to transition to SportsCenter, announcer Brent Musburger made a sign-off with similar comments that got him in trouble this past week.
“Coming up next, SportsCenter. For Fran Fraschilla and Holly Rowe, who was really smokin’ tonight, I want to say so long from Lawrence,” Musburger said.
However, an ESPN PR person tweeted Tuesday morning that Musburger said “it was really smokin’ tonight.”
This was Musburger’s first game for ESPN since the BCS national championship game Monday night between Alabama and Notre Dame. Besides the lopsided score, the game received notable attention for Musburger’s ogling at Katherine Webb, Miss Alabama 2012 and the girlfriend of the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, AJ McCarron.
Musburger’s comments became viral during the game, as did Webb’s Twitter account. The following day, ESPN apologized on behalf of Musburger for going “too far” with his attention to Webb during the broadcast.
According to Chris Chase of USA Today, Musburger made no reference to the comments or the network’s apology until the final seconds of Monday’s broadcast.
Deadspin.com reported earlier Tuesday morning that Musburger claimed he said “It was really smokin’.”
