Katherine WebbThe only real entertainment during Monday night’s BCS national championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame came from what was said in the ESPN announcer’s booth. However, ESPN has apparently deemed those comments controversial enough to warrant an apology.

Play-by-play man Brent Musburger got a little carried away during Alabama’s rout of Notre Dame, especially once the camera turned to Bama quarterback AJ McCarron‘s girlfriend, Katherine Webb.

“You see that lovely lady there?” Musberger said as the camera focused on Webb. “That’s AJ McCarron’s girlfriend … I tell you, you quarterbacks get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful women. Wow. Whoa.”

The comments instantly became viral, setting the Internet and Twitter ablaze with the video and reaction.

Apparently ESPN felt things got a little carried away in the booth, and they issued this statement on Tuesday (via The Associated Press):

“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”

Webb didn’t have any problem with the comments, according to the AP, but the same might not be said for McCarron.
