On Tuesday, it was announced that Newton will return to Auburn this spring — only this time, he will be looking to become successful in the classroom instead on the football field, according to The Associated Press.
Auburn spokesperson Kirk Sampson has confirmed that Newton is currently enrolled in classes for the spring semester, working on earning his degree in sociology. The AP went on to report that Newton will not grant interviews and is focused on being a student.
Auburn was one of three stops for Newton in college. He began his collegiate career at the University of Florida and spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons in Gainesville before transferring to Blinn College, a junior college located in Brenham, Tex.
In his one season at Auburn, Newton threw 30 touchdown passes to only seven interceptions, while rushing for over 1,400 yards with 20 scores.
Following a record-breaking rookie season, Newton and the Panthers struggled through an up-and-down 2012 season, finishing at 7-9. Newton was down in both passing yards and touchdowns from his rookie campaign, however he was better down the stretch throwing five touchdowns and only two picks during the Panthers’ four-game winning streak to close out the season.
