Ray Lewis is finishing a solid NFL career the way every player dreams about. He’s logged 17 seasons, brought in countless accolades, won a Super Bowl, secured a post-retirement deal with ESPN and has a chance to go out on top with a championship.
But, like many athletes, Lewis may be subject to that age-old malady: not knowing when to hang it up.
While Lewis announced before the playoffs that this would be his final season, teammate Ed Reed says that’s no longer a definite. Reed told reporters in New Orleans not to be “so sure” that Lewis will call it quits after the Super Bowl.
“Maybe he’ll play 10 games next year,” Reed said.
Now, that’s hardly as definitive as the statements that Lewis has been making about whether he’ll be back, but there is reason to think that Lewis will have second guesses when he misses the game that’s been his fuel for so many years.
Either way, the seed has now been planted. If Lewis suddenly reverses course and plays for another year, you heard it here first.
