In football, it can be easy to accidentally have a 12th man on the field. With the amount of switching most teams do throughout a game between different offenses and defenses, it’s at least acceptable to accidentally throw an extra guy on the gridiron. But in basketball, it’s pretty easy to see when a team is playing with six.
The Mavericks did just that on Tuesday and they received a technical foul for their gaffe. Perhaps they were watching a popular (that may be too strong a word, lets try existent) mid-90s Wayans Brothers movie before the game, and thought they could get away with it.
With eight seconds left in the first half, Darren Collison took the inbound pass from Vince Carter and raced down the court. Unfortunately, he had Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, Brendan Wright and O.J. Mayo waiting for him at the other end.
At the time of the error, the Mavericks were up by 15 points, 59-44. That was the turning point in the game, though, as the Trail Blazers mounted a second-half comeback and wound up winning 106-104.
