Ravens’ Support for Joe Flacco’s Future Contract Makes It Sound Like They’re Not Sure About Winning Super Bowl

Joe Flacco may not be in line for Peyton Manning money, but the Ravens have been saying all the right things this week about getting him a new contract after this season ends.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome‘s latest comments, however, sound like maybe he was whipping out the wrong cliché for the moment.

“We’ll be able to get that thing done,” Newsome said Tuesday. “But one thing we do know: He’ll be playing football for us next year. And sometimes that’s all you can look forward to, is just next year.”

All they can hope for is next year? That sounds an awful lot like what teams say when they lose short of a championship and have to promise that another chance will yield them success. The Ravens should be able to do better than that against the 49ers on Sunday.

Flacco is hoping to get around $20 million a season from the Ravens, according to CBSSports.com, with the Ravens likely to use the franchise tag on him until the two sides can work out a longer deal.

Short of that, there’s always next year.
