It seems very likely that Mike Napoli will be playing for the Red Sox in 2013. Speaking before the Red Sox Town Hall on Thursday, Ben Cherington would not confirm the reports that the Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with the veteran slugger, but he did seem very optimistic that something could be announced before long.
Cherington acknowledged that the Red Sox have made progress in their talks with Napoli, who was believed to be on his way to Boston back at the beginning of December before a hip issue arose during his physical with the club. The Red Sox GM said he hopes to have more formal news very soon, even if it’s not within the next couple of days.
“We’re making some progress,” Cherington said. “It’s fair to say we’ve made some progress in the last day or so. Hopefully, we’ll have something more formal to say soon, but not [Thursday].”
Cherington was asked whether there has ever been any doubt about a deal getting done, but he pointed to the open dialogue between the two sides as evidence that something always seemed possible.
