Scott Atchison was one of the Red Sox’ pleasant surprises last season, but he won’t be a part of the Red Sox’ new-look pitching staff this season.
Atchison signed a minor league contract with the Mets that includes an invitation to major league spring training, the Mets announced Tuesday. According to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford, Atchison will make $700,000 if he makes the Mets’ major league club, and the reliever will then have a chance to make $150,000 in incentives.
Atchison, who will turn 37 in March, tossed 51 1/3 innings over 42 appearances with the Red Sox in 2012. He pitched well, compiling a 1.58 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP, but he battled a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which forced him to miss some action in the middle of the season.
The Red Sox decided to non-tender Atchison earlier this offseason, and he subsequently became a free agent.
