Qatar is known as a land of excess, a country so rich that it can afford to effectively buy the World Cup and build nearly a dozen temporary soccer stadiums to house the tournament. However, apparently Tiger Woods is too rich even for Qatar.
During a news conference this week, the president of the Qatar Golf Association said Woods — who will be in Abu Dhabi the week prior — will not be at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Why not? Apparently it comes down to money, according to Doha News.
“Tiger Woods demands $3 million just for an appearance if he were to compete in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters — which is not worth paying for a tournament of $2.5 million prize money,” Hassan al Nuaimi said.
Although Woods has never played in Qatar before, both the Abu Dhabi tournament and Qatar Masters are on the European Tour schedule, on which Woods has always dabbled in large tournaments. However, there doesn’t appear to be a precedent for a player requesting an appearance fee larger than a tournament’s purse.
