Legendary Fresno State football coach Jim Sweeney died on Friday night. He was 83.

Sweeney coached the Bulldogs from 1976 to 1996 with a short layover at the pro level in 1978 and 1979. He led Fresno State to a 144-74-3 record. The school announced his passing, but provided no further details.

“Most of what our football program has accomplished in recent years was clearly made possible by the path that Coach Sweeney blazed for Fresno State football throughout his two decades of leadership,” athletic director Thomas Boeh said. “He was a man of vision, toughness and character who led the Bulldogs to new heights and went on to become a national icon.”

Sweeney was also led Montana State and Washington State during his 46-year football coaching career. He was 201-153-4 overall.
