Mike Napoli may be slated to get the majority of the at-bats at first base, but there are a couple reasons it may make sense to have a dedicated backup.
For one, though he’s never suffered any symptoms from it, there’s no telling when the degenerative condition in Napoli’s hip may act up. Secondly, Napoli is probably best deployed in a platoon, taking most of his at-bats against lefties.
