You’re off the hook, Francisco Liriano. Tampa Bay’s Joel Peralta has officially taken over the mantle of strangest preseason injury.
The Rays reliever, who is currently in spring training with the team in St. Petersburg, Fla., apparently hurt his neck while getting out of his car to get sandwiches. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times chronicled the events, reporting that Peralta did manage to get his sandwiches and, yes, he did enjoy them.
Here's one for the weird spring injury lists @jaysonst: #Rays Peralta hurt his neck getting out of car when he stopped for sandwiches.

#Rays Peralta was still able to get the sandwiches, by the way, and said they were good. Shouldn't miss much time.

Liriano had been the leader in the offseason injury clubhouse after he broke his arm while trying to scare his kids back in December. Though Peralta’s sandwich mishap may be slightly more absurd, we still say he made out better than his Pirates counterpart. The 36-year-old isn’t expected to miss significant time, while Liriano will likely be on the shelf until May.
