The Chiefs got their quarterback, even if the trade won’t be made official until March 12.

The 49ers completed a trade that will send Alex Smith to Kansas City, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. The 49ers will receive a second-round pick in 2013 and a “similar pick” in 2014, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News.

The trade can’t officially be made until March 12 when the new league year begins.

Smith led the 49ers to a 6-2 record as a starter in 2012. He was San Francisco’s No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. The 28-year-old will play under new head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. Last season, the Chiefs started Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn at quarterback.
