Brandon Webb hasn’t pitched since 2009, but his name has come up frequently as a potential low-risk, high-reward pitcher. We can finally end the speculation, though, as it appears the right-hander is calling it quits.
According to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, agents Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana of Millennium Sports revealed that Webb is retiring from baseball, officially ending what has been an interesting career.
Webb was one of the best pitchers in baseball for a three-year stretch from 2006 to 2008. He won the National League Cy Young award in 2006 when he went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA. The righty then followed that up with an 18-win campaign in 2007 and 22 wins in 2008, finishing second in NL Cy Young voting each of those seasons.
Webb only made one start in 2009 and has been sidelined ever since. The 33-year-old has made a few comeback attempts, but he’s endured a number of setbacks, and it has finally resulted in the end of what was once a very promising career.
