Don’t start printing those 2019 Mariners calendars featuring Felix Hernandez just yet.
Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners were close to agreeing on a seven-year, $175 million contract extension, but talks have stopped for now. Hernandez has an existing elbow condition that could affect negotiations, according to ESPN.com. The report quoted a source as saying, “It’s an issue.”
Hernandez has thrown for 1,620 1/3 innings in his eight-year career. Only Bert Blyleven, Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden threw more before their 27th birthday.
The 2010 Cy Young winner has two years remaining on his current contract. He has a career 3.22 ERA with 1,487 strikeouts.
