Mindy McCready, the country music star who crossed paths with the sports world after a reported affair with Roger Clemens, has committed suicide. She was 37.
According to NBC News reporter Andrea Canning, McCready shot and killed herself on Sunday evening. The singer’s brother confirmed the death to the New York Daily News.
McCready was linked to Clemens in 2008, when the Daily News reported she had engaged in a 10-year affair with the pitcher dating back to his time with the Boston Red Sox.
Clemens released a statement to reporters on Monday morning.
“Yes, this is sad news,” the statement read. “I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life.
“The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice.”
The Daily News reports that McCready had been struggling with mental health issues recently after her boyfriend died of what was initially ruled a suicide. However, the sheriff’s office in Cleburne County, Ark., had opened an investigation into the death.
