With a plethora of injuries to deal with, the veteran-laden Yankees are in dire straits before the season has even begun. Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira are all looking at weeks on the disabled list, and the New York depth is wearing thin.
So, perhaps it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise that, with a traditionally quiet trade market during spring training, that the Yankees would look at some outside-the-box alternatives. Among the reports coming on Monday were that New York was considering trying to lure players like Derek Lee and Chipper Jones out of retirement to fill in for their hobbled stars.
Well, after a year-long 2012 retirement tour that included receiving accolades and gifts in just about every city the Braves visited, Jones is saying that he’s perfectly happy staying retired, thank you. And, after making millions of dollars and staring down a Hall of Fame induction in five years, why wouldn’t Jones rather be playing golf than sacrificing his body for a 20th major league season.
Sounds like it’s time for Jones to start putting the same kind of work in on his golf swing that he used to hone his switch-hitting abilities.
