Both Drake Britton and the Red Sox understand the severity of the left-hander’s recent DUI arrest. And while neither side has commented much on the matter, it’s obvious Britton feels a great deal of regret.

“I’m extremely remorseful,” Britton said. “It’s an internal matter that’s going on right now. I’m sorry for the negativity that I brought, but that’s about all I can say right now. I’d really rather not say anything else.”

Britton was arrested early Sunday morning, and the 23-year-old was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence with property damage. The arrest report said that the pitching prospect drove over a curb and knocked down a fence, and that he later admitted that he had been drinking.

The Red Sox have declined to comment, other than saying that the arrest is being taken “very seriously, and it is being addressed.”

Britton, who went 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 16 starts at Double-A Portland last season, was optioned from the Red Sox’ major league camp to Double-A during the team’s first round of roster cuts on Sunday.
