Elvis Dumervil Fires Agent After Contract Does Not Get Faxed in Time, Hires Patriots-Hater Tom Condon

It was clear someone was going to have to pay after Elvis Dumervil didn’t get his signed contract back to the Broncos by a 2 p.m. deadline on Thursday. That someone is the defensive end’s now-former agent, Marty Magid.

Dumervil fired Magid on Saturday, according to the Denver Post. Dumervil and the Broncos had agreed to a restructured contract that would net the defensive end $8 million, down from the $12 million he was previously set to earn. All that needed to happen was for Dumervil’s people to get a signed agreement over to the Broncos by a 2 p.m. deadline, that did not happen and Dumervil was subsequently cut.

Now Dumervil is a free agent, and he likely won’t get a new contract worth the $8 million he was nearly set to earn. Denver will also have to pay (literally), as the failed transaction will cost them $4.9 against their salary cap.

Dumervil has hired Tom Condon, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Usually Dumervil would have had to wait five days to hire new representation, but Magid waived that period.

The hiring of Condon may be bad news for Patriots fans hoping to add Dumervil to the New England defense. Condon and the Patriots have a terrible history together.

“We pretend there are 31 franchises in the NFL now and they pretend we don’t exist, even though we represent 140 [now over 160] of the best players in the NFL,” Condon once told Ron Borges of the Boston Herald. ”That’s fine.”

The Patriots did reach a deal with a Condon client last season, Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd was released on Saturday when the Patriots were set to give him a $3 million roster bonus. The bad blood stems from the Patriots and Condon trying to negotiate tight end Ben Watson’s contract back when he was a rookie in 2004. The Patriots wanted to sign Watson to a six-year deal, Condon refused, Watson accepted and Condon resigned.
