The men’s national soccer teams of Mexico and the United States played a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night in front of around 110,000 fans at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Included in the passionately robust crowd were around 500 U.S. fans.
Most of those visiting supporters were clad in some combination of red, white and blue. A number of them left the stadium drenched in joy, sweat … and beer.
The underdog U.S. team held Mexico to a scoreless draw thanks to a heroic defensive performance. It was a historic result, as Mexico had beaten the Americans in every World Cup qualifier at Azteca since 1997. The draw improved the Americans’ record in World Cup qualifiers in Mexico to 0-13-2. The shock result angered many Mexican fans at Azteca (and beyond).
A hefty police presence separated the U.S. and Mexican fans, but that didn’t stop a few Mexican supporters from wishing the Americans a safe ride home. They lobbed cups of beer and other objects into the section holding the U.S. fans. Most of the Americans escaped injury, but one fan suffered a cut on his head after he was struck by a flying bottle.
The flying debris didn’t stop the visiting fans from singing, chanting and expressing their jubilation at the game’s outcome.
