You wouldn’t expect the most exciting play in a 5-1 hockey game to come on the defensive end, but that was the case on Saturday. While Providence lit up the scoreboard in a rout of Boston College, it was PC freshman goalie Jon Gillies that stole the show.
With both teams still scoreless midway through the first period, Gillies misplayed a carom off the rear boards, leaving a wide-open net for BC’s Brendan Silk. But in a move reminiscent of Tim Thomas in the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals, the young netminder dove across the crease, foiling Silk’s bid with a spectacular stick save.
