The gaffe made by Elvis Dumervil‘s agent that resulted in the defensive end getting released by the Broncos could benefit the Patriots.
New England has shown interest in Dumervil since he became a free agent, according to the Baltimore Sun. The Patriots will be battling with the Ravens, Steelers and Titans for Dumervil’s services.
Denver was attempting to lower Dumervil’s 2013 salary from $12 million to $8 million, but the seven-year veteran’s now-former agent, Marty Magid, didn’t fax back a signed agreement in time. Dumervil fired Magid and hired Tom Condon, which could impact New England’s chances with the defensive end.
Condon and the Patriots have done very little business since they had a disagreement over Ben Watson‘s rookie contract back in 2004. New England signed Brandon Lloyd, a Condon client, last offseason, but he was cut this week when the Patriots were set to owe the wide receiver a $3 million roster bonus.
Dumervil had 11 sacks with the Broncos last season. In six NFL seasons (Dumervil missed 2010 with a torn pectoral muscle), the defensive end has piled up 63 1/2 sacks. On Friday, New England brought defensive ends Dwight Freeney and John Abraham to Foxboro for visits. Neither has signed with the team as of Monday morning.
