Of all the reasons to miss a hockey game, not having your pads is a rare one.

However, that’s exactly what appears to be the case for Florida Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom, whose goalie pads were apparently lost by United Airlines during the team’s flight home from Carolina.

The Panthers are playing in Sunrise on Sunday against the Hurricanes, a day after playing in Carolina. As a result of the mishap, Rob Tallas will dress as an emergency backup for starter Scott Clemmensen.

The silver lining in all of this for the Cats? If Markstrom’s pads do show up during the course of the game, he can replace Tallas and would be allowed to play.

Maybe next time he’ll use carry-on?

Update: Markstrom’s pads have been located, according to the Panthers’ Twitter account, and the 23-year-old is now back on the bench.
