The Rangers reportedly sent a scout to check out Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain, but it appears they also have their eyes on another team in the American League East.
According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers have sent senior scout Don Welke to Florida to not only scout Chamberlain, but also to get a feel for possible matchups with the Red Sox.
Boston’s bullpen appears to be deep — although injuries to Craig Breslow and Franklin Morales have lessened that depth somewhat — so it makes sense that the Rangers are at least checking out the Red Sox in their quest to add relief help.
“The bullpen is an area we’d like to improve,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels reportedly said. “We just need to give it a chance to improve internally first.
“Roles have yet to be determined in front of [closer] Joe [Nathan]. I don’t necessarily thing you need X number of righties or lefties if they have the ability to get guys out. We should get stronger as we healthy and our young guys get experience.”
For what it’s worth, the Yankees and Red Sox reportedly both had representatives at the Rangers-Oakland exhibition game on Thursday.
