Report: Red Sox Talking Internally About Recently Released Outfielder Brennan Boesch

Baltimore Orioles v/s Detroit Tigers April 7, 2011The Red Sox spent much of the offseason looking for a left-handed hitting outfielder. With less than three weeks before Opening Day, a new one has become available.

The Tigers released Brennan Boesch on Wednesday, and according to The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham, the Red Sox are discussing the outfielder internally to determine whether he’d be an upgrade to their bench.

Boesch put together a productive 2011 season, but the 27-year-old regressed in 2012. Boesch and the Tigers avoided arbitration in January with a one-year, $2.3 million pact, but Detroit is only on the hook for one-sixth of that salary now that he’s been released.

Boesch hit .240 with a .286 on-base percentage, 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 132 games last season. In 2011, he hit .283 with a .341 on-base percentage, 16 home runs and 54 RBIs in 115 games.

If the Red Sox ultimately decide to pursue Boesch, they’ll likely have some company. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the Mets appear to have interest in Boesch, and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees will at least look into the possibility of signing the outfielder.

Would Brennan Boesch be a good fit for the Red Sox? >>
