Washington State and the University of Idaho have not played since 2007, but a fight that involved a knife and a gun between players from both football squads will add some heat to their Sept. 21 matchup.
Mansel Simmons, a freshman wide receiver, might have suffered a skull fracture in the altercation between both teams. Simmons was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion after receiving a beating from a man police believe is an Idaho football player, according to the Sacramento Bee. Simmons regained consciousness on Monday.
The two teams were kicked out of a Pullman, Wash., party early Sunday morning after they began arguing. Police say about 20 players gathered in a church parking lot across the street from the party and began to fight. No one was stabbed or shot, according to Scout.com. The University of Idaho is located less than eight miles from Washington State’s Pullman campus. The two teams’ football rivalry is nicknamed “The Battle of Palouse” after the area of land that stands between both states.
A vehicle belonging to the girlfriend of an Idaho football player was “basically totaled” at the scene of the assault, according to Scout.com. “A door was basically ripped off its hinges,” according to police. Mirrors were also ripped off and the vehicle received body damage.
