Ryan Miller Apologizes for Patrick Kaleta Comments, Admits He’s Prone to Say ‘Stupid Things’

That “beep, beep, beep” you hear out of the Buffalo Sabres’ dressing room would be Ryan Miller doing some backpedaling.

The Sabres goalie made headlines following Sunday night’s loss to the Washington Capitals, when he called out Buffalo forward Patrick Kaleta after Kaleta complained about being sat down after returning from a suspension. Miller said that Kaleta needed to “grow up” as well.

Just a couple of days later, Miller is saying he was told Kaleta said something different than the forward actually said and that, combined with the fact that he was frustrated following the loss, led him to criticize his own teammate.

“You can get me to say just about anything after a loss like that,” Miller told the Sabres’ team website. “I’ve talked to Patty and I’ve actually apologized to Patty. I felt like what I was told he said and what he actually said were two different things. … He’s frustrated he can’t be out there, which is exactly what you’d expect. We’re just gonna try to move on from that.”

To Miller’s credit, he did acknowledge that just keeping quiet — he actually declined comment Sunday before apparently changing his mind — would have made things easier.

“Either way, I probably shouldn’t have handled it that way, but I was frustrated. I think everybody in Buffalo knows I’m prone to say stupid things over the course of the season,” said Miller, who also once called Bruins forward Milan Lucic a “gutless piece of [expletive]” following  a game.  ”I just wanted to make sure that I handled it with Patty and handled it publicly. It wasn’t the right thing to say no matter what, but I feel like it was a little misrepresented [of what Kaleta said] to get me to say what I did.”
