Mark Teixeira‘s wrist injury has the Yankees scouring the retirement list for possible replacements.
Brian Cashman told Jack Curry of YES that he intends to reach out to Chipper Jones‘ agent to lure the third baseman out of retirement. The Yankees have shown interest in bringing first baseman Derrek Lee out of retirement as well. Cashman also told Curry that New York has “investigated Scott Rolen as an option.”
Jones went on his farewell tour during the 2012 season and seems content in retirement. He hit .287 with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs in his final year.
Jones’ agent told Joel Sherman of the New York Post that the third baseman is “retired and not planning to come back at all.” He also said Jones likely wouldn’t want to mess with his Braves legacy, though they had talked about him playing for the Yankees before.
It would almost seem fitting if Jones went through a will-he-or-won’t-he retirement period like Brett Favre did. There is no word on whether the Yankees have tried to lure Fred McGriff or Terry Pendleton out of retirement yet.
