It doesn’t always help to hear someone give the “I’ve been there before” speech when you’re having a rough day, but when that person is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and NFL MVP, it’s got to help a little.
Geno Smith received some kind words Thursday night after he failed to get picked in the first round of the NFL draft. Smith was one of the stronger quarterbacks coming into the draft this year, but he also absorbed some rough criticism from one analyst in particular that left people wondering whether he was worth an early pick.
In a first round that went light on quarterbacks, Smith wasn’t chosen. But that doesn’t spell doom, at least not according to one quarterback who went lower than expected in his draft and had to spend much of his first round waiting as people watched him, much like Smith.
Aaron Rodgers, who slipped to No. 24 in the 2005 draft before rising to fame with the Green Bay Packers and outplaying the quarterbacks taken before him, passed on some encouragement to Smith on Thursday night.

Rodgers has since gone on to take Brett Favre‘s old job, lead his team to a championship, win a league MVP and notch various offensive records. That’s something for Smith to keep in mind, even after his rough night.
