If the management of Austrian soccer team Rapid Vienna didn’t already know how the clubs fans were feeling, they certainly do now.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Rapid fans constructed a brick wall which blocked the front door of the club’s office.
The free-standing structure was designed to keep Rapid management from running (or ruining) the club. We only know this because the builders attached a photograph of general manager Werner Kuhn, with a caption saying “I’m not allowed in.”
Rapid Vienna is Austria’s most successful club, boasting 32 Bundesliga (first division) championships in its rich history.
But Rapid has struggled this season, and fans have voiced their discontent. The team sits third in the league — 17 points behind second-placed Red Bull Salzburg and 23 points behind leader 23 points FK Austria Wien. Two weeks ago, Rapid fans boycotted the first half of a game against Wiener Neustadt.
Rapid fired head coach Peter Schottel in mid-April, but results and performances haven’t improved.
This prompted fans to take further action and build the famed Rapid Vienna brick wall, but it didn’t have the desired effect. Rapid lost its next game to Red Bull Salzburg.
