Blue Jays Claim First Baseman Mauro Gomez Off Waivers From Red Sox

Mauro GomezAfter making his major league debut with Boston last season, Mauro Gomez is heading north.

The first baseman, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week, has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gomez has bounced around the minors since 2005, making stops in Rangers and Braves systems before being signed by the Sox in February of 2012.

He hit .310 with 24 home runs, 74 RBIs and a .960 OPS with Triple-A Pawtucket last season, earning International League MVP honors, and spent three separate stints with major league club, hitting .275 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 37 games.

Gomez is expected to return to Triple-A, where he’ll begin the season with the Jays’ affiliate in Buffalo.
