The crazy end of Borrusia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League win over Malaga captured the world’s imagination, but one scene which took place before kickoff was just as memorable.

Borussia Dortmund fans at Signal Iduna Park created and performed one of the best tifo displays (a choreographed exhibition of fan art consisting of banners and cards) the world has ever seen.

As the two teams walked onto the field, fans standing on Dortmund’s famed “Südtribüne” terrace held up yellow cards, which created the outline of the European Cup. Seconds later, they raised a painted banner showing a man peering through a pair of binoculars. Underneath him was a message saying (translated from the German) “On the trail of the lost Cup.”

Dortmund last lifted the European Cup when it won the Champions League in 1997, and the creepy-looking man with the binoculars is closer to finding that lost cup than at any point since then. Dortmund beat Malaga 3-2 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinal of this season’s competition. It will find discover its semifinal opponent on Friday morning.
