Few noticed when Josip “Jozo” Gaspar was fired by NK Precko Zagreb in early April, but the details of his dismissal will certainly grab attention.
Precko Zagreb, a lower-league soccer club in Croatia, shares facilities with another local club — FC Sparka Elektra.
Gaspar allegedly admitted to going into the Sparka Elektra dressing room and stealing a credit card from the wallet of one of its players, according to the Mail.
He then did what any right-thinking person would do: He drove to a nearby liquor store and bought 36 bottles of Jagermeister. The take was worth around $690, but that wasn’t enough for the former Dinamo Zagreb midfielder.
A few hours later, Gaspar drove to another store and tried to buy another 10 bottles of the popular alcoholic beverage. It was there that his master plan was ruined.
The stolen card was declined due to insufficient funds, and security officers recognized Gaspar and took him into custody. He was reportedly seen on CCTV making the bulk purchase at the first store, and word got back to his club.
Precko Zagreb fired him without disclosing why. We now know the full story thanks to some enterprising Croatian journalists.
