BOSTON — Doc Rivers admits he does not watch a whole lot of women’s basketball. Between coaching his own team and closely following high school, AAU and college basketball thanks to his son Austin‘s stellar play over the last few years, Rivers spends plenty of time watching the men’s version of the game.
The Celtics coach did find it intriguing, though, when a reporter mentioned to him prior to Friday’s game that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban suggested earlier in the week that he would consider drafting Baylor women’s basketball standout Brittney Griner in the second round of the NBA draft.
“I said a long time ago, if I find a green man walking down the street who I think can rebound, I’m going to draft him,” Rivers said. “I don’t think anybody cares, really, [what gender a player is]. Obviously, it would make a huge story and it would be really cool. I just don’t know the answer. I don’t watch it enough to know. But it would be great.”
Griner, a 6-foot-8 center, recently concluded her career with the Bears as the second-leading scorer in women’s college basketball history. Cuban noted that she would have to earn a spot on the team in training camp, but the presence of a female player on an NBA court would certainly sell a few tickets for preseason games.
