Until now, the hotel inside Toronto’s Rogers Centre was the only way to actually live at the ballpark. However, the city of Indianapolis plans to make permanent stadium living a reality in the near future.
Bush Stadium, built in 1931, has sat vacant since 1996, when the Triple-A International League Indianapolis Indians moved into Victory Field midway through the season. However, it’s also listed on the United States Register of Historic Places, meaning that it can’t be torn down. So, the city has come up with a plan to make use of the aging structure in a genius bit of urban renewal.
Opening in August, the old stadium will now house 266 relatively low-cost apartments. According to The Architect’s Newspaper, not only will the infield be preserved, but its press box and scoreboard will remain in place, as will ticket booths. Many of the 13,000 seats will be integrated into the surrounding common areas as furniture.
The project broke ground about 14 months ago, and is a $22 million project headed by Heartland Design. The stadium’s quirky design also lends itself to numerous different apartment layouts and floor plans.
