JaMarcus RussellJaMarcus Russell‘s weight keeps ticking down, down, down, but no one seems to know what the magic number is to get teams interested in giving the former NFL quarterback a second shot in the league.

While Russell is considered a long shot to return to the NFL, recent reports that he had dropped 27 pounds and that some scouts could see him playing again got people’s attention. But Russell has yet to get a workout with a team, and he told USA Today that he does not plan to hold his own pro day.

“We never had a pro day date schedule,” he said. “We came up with the idea that if teams were interested, we’d go in there and work out at their place. It would be better with them having all their coaches there at the same time. It would be better for me, too.”

TEST Academy CEO Brian Martin, who has been among those helping Russell with his workouts, said the main factor in teams showing interest will be Russell getting back to playing size.

“Everybody’s kind of waiting to see where his weight is, and when he gets close to weight, they want to bring him in and evaluate him,” he said.

Russell’s camp also talked about possible landing spots for the former Raiders quarterback, saying a backup role in Arizona or Chicago would make the most sense.
