Mike Piazza has had a strange year, and it may become even weirder.
The 12-time All Star didn’t make the Baseball Hall of Fame, but he will be making his ballet debut in a Miami City Ballet production of Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, according to CBSSports.com. According to the ballet’s press release, “Piazza will not be dancing, leaping or catching ballerinas. But he will be sporting a 1920s-era gangster costume, throwing out a few lines Al Capone-style and then sitting back and watching the stage come alive with dazzling dance routines, a gorgeous Strip Tease Girl, a tap-dancing Hoofer and the colorful Ladies of the Ballet.”
Piazza will be taking the role for one night only — May 3 — and it’s at his 6-year-old daughter’s request. Piazza’s previous acting experience includes a Pert Shampoo ad and roles in the television show Married With Children and the movie Two Weeks Notice.
The former Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, Padres and A’s catcher said he is excited for the opportunity to impress his daughters.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing the reaction of my two little girls,” Piazza said. “My oldest daughter is a student at Miami City Ballet School, and for her to have the opportunity to see Daddy on stage is my little gift. I’m looking forward to it.”
Piazza released his autobiography, Long Shot, this year. It blasts Vin Scully and references a Tom Glavine book that doesn’t exist. He also denied steroid allegations in the book and detailed how he took karate lessons to fight Roger Clemens. Like we said, it’s been a strange year for Piazza.
