Montreal Alouettes Own Tim Tebow’s Rights in CFL, Invite Him to Compete to Be Quarterback

Tim TebowIf Tim Tebow still wants to play quarterback, he may have to take a trip up north.

The New York Jets released Tebow on Monday, leaving his NFL future very much up in the air. NFL teams don’t seem interested in Tebow continuing his career at quarterback, so if he wants to continue on as a quarterback the Canadian Football League might be his best option.

The Montreal Alouettes own Tebow’s rights, if he chooses to take the CFL route, and general manager Jim Popp acknowledged that  they would welcome the former Heisman Trophy winner to come compete for a spot on their team. But even they won’t guarantee him a starting job, according to TSN.

“If he wants to come to Canada he would be in the same situation as the one he was in with New York,” Popp said. “He can come here and compete to be the backup to Anthony Calvillo and learn the game, just like Jeff Garcia did [behind Doug Flutie]. And one day he might be the guy; that’s our vision. He can learn from the best.”

Calvillo is 40 years old and has played 18 seasons in the CFL, so his time as the Alouette’s starter might be coming to a close, which might be good news for Tebow. Then again, the CFL isn’t exactly a perfect fit for Tebow, either.

The CFL does benefit more mobile quarterbacks like Tebow — the success of Flutie, Garcia and a few others are clear indications of that — but passing is still a big part of the game. Cavillo has thrown for over 4,500 yards in each of the past five seasons, including 5,000-plus in each of the past two seasons. So Tebow might have some work to do, considering he’s completed just 47.9 percent of his passes and thrown for just 2,422 yards in 35 career games.

The Alouettes also own the right to former Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vince Young. So even if Tebow does join the CFL, getting on the field still might be quite a challenge.
