The Bruins were busy around the trade deadline, but arguably the biggest news surrounding the team has to do with a player already on the roster.
B’s general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Wednesday that Boston center Patrice Bergeron has suffered a moderate concussion. The forward left Tuesday night’s win over the Ottawa Senators in the second period after getting tangled up with Senators forward Colin Greening in front of the Bruins net. According to Chiarelli, Bergeron was hit below the ear. In addition to having the concussion, Bergeron is also experiencing neck soreness, Chiarelli revealed.
“I talked to him probably about an hour ago,” Chiarelli said. “He was in very good spirits. He was out walking today. He was annoyed at it. He was emotional last night.”
There is no timetable for Bergeron’s return at this point.
“I don’t know when you’ll see him again. Well, you’ll see him again but I don’t think you’ll see him tomorrow. He sounded good, and I told him that we’ll work together at getting him back.”
The injury news just so happened to come on one of the busiest GM days in the season, but Chiarelli stated the obvious in saying that there was no way he was going to be able to fill any void left by Bergeron in the final hours leading up to the trade deadline.
“You think about it, you see a player like Patrice go down, and there’s no way I’m gonna replace him,” Chiarelli said. “There wasn’t that caliber of player so I wasn’t going to go around chasing it all day. You see across the league teams that have picked up the rest of the team when there are injuries and I expect that to be the case.”
This is the fourth concussion Bergeron has suffered in his career.
