The Red Sox have postponed their game against the Royals originally scheduled for Friday night, and team COO Sam Kennedy has now provided some insight into how the team came to that decision.
In a conversation with WEEI’s Rob Bradford, Kenendy explained the team’s decision to ask players and employees to stay home, citing a desire not to distract from Boston Police efforts while working with the league and government officials in deciding what to do.
“We’ve been in communication with the public officials and Major League Baseball, and we made the decision to postpone the game given everything that’s going on,” Kennedy said. “We’ve been in touch with the Boston police, the Massachusetts officials from various agencies and been sort of following the lead of public officials, which we all need to do right now given the severity of the situations.
Kennedy also described the team’s decision-making process in relation to the Bruins, who also rescheduled their game originally set for Friday evening.
“We’ve been in touch with [Bruins president] Cam Neely and [vice president of sales and marketing] Amy Latimer of the Bruins throughout the day and both agreed we wanted to be in sync with each other, and monitor the event. We didn’t want to be a drain on any of the resources that are being dedicated to the current investigation and efforts. So we tried to be as respectful as possible and waited to get information,” said Kennedy. “Obviously the city is still in a state of lockdown, so the Bruins and Red Sox felt it was prudent to postpone the games. We made that decision and put that word out.
“We didn’t want to cause any distraction for what’s important here,” the Red Sox executive continued. “And what’s important here is they find this guy.”
Both the Red Sox and Bruins are tentatively scheduled to play Saturday afternoon.
