Washington, D.C., council member David Grosso is planning to introduce a resolution that will call for the Washington Redskins to change their name to the Redtails, according to The Washington Post. Grosso says he has two other council members that agree with the resolution.
“It’s been a long time that we’ve had this name associated with Washington, and I think its time we take a stand and change it,” Grosso said.
Grosso is putting together the resolution because he says “Redskins” is “a derogatory, racist name.” Washington, D.C.’s mayor, Vincent C. Gray, called for a name change to be discussed back in January, especially if the team were to return to D.C. city limits.
The name Redtails would honor the the Tuskegee Airmen, who broke the color barrier for U.S. military pilots in World War II. Grosso mentioned that the team would not need to change their fight song or their feather logo.
This tweet could be in relation to anything, but it appears the Redskins’ quarterback does not support the name change.
